Das Werk des polnischen Künstlers
Pawel Althamer (geb. 1967 / Warschau), der u.a. an der documenta X teilnahm, umfasst sowohl Skulptur, Installation, Video und Performance als auch künstlerische Intervention im öffentlichen Raum. Er selbst umschreibt seine Arbeiten, die auch als soziales Projekt aufgefasst werden können, mit Begriffen wie Intuition, Emotion, Spiritualität, Inspiration oder Irrationalität.
Bei der Kassler Ausstellung mit dem Titel "Frühling" sind Kinder die Protagonisten und Co-Autoren, die Althamer in sein Projekt mit einbezieht. Die Kinder sollen ihre Fantasie und "freie Kreativität" in Projekten vor Ort umzusetzen. Der Ausstellungsraum wird somit einer signifikanten Veränderung unterworfen. Wie in anderen Arbeiten zuvor übergibt Pawel Althamer auch hier seine Autorschaft an andere.
Parallel wird in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum die Ausstellung "Fomuska" eröffnet, in der die italienische Künstlerin eine speziell für die Ausstellung entwickelte Maschine mehreren hundert minimalistischen Zeichnungen gegenüberstellt.

From 4 April to 21 June 2009, Kunsthalle Fridericianum will not only be proverbially, but also literally, charged with energy. In his large exhibition Frühling, Pawel Althamer, together with many of Kassel´s children, will make the museum tick to a completely new rhythm, while Micol Assael, with her exhibition Fomuska, will actually electrify the place.
PAWEL ALTHAMER Frühling
Twelve years after the Polish artist´s participation in documenta X, Kunsthalle Fridericianum presents the new exhibition project Frühling by Pawel Althamer. By turning over the rooms in the Kunsthalle to the discretion of the children, the artist gives its interior a transforming overhaul.
Intuition, emotion, spirituality, irrationality: all these are terms or definitions Pawel Althamer (born 1967 in Warsaw) uses to describe his works. His oeuvre ranges from sculptures and installations to video, performance, happening and barely perceptible artistic interventions in public space. Althamer´s work can also be seen as a social project. He is both a sculptor and a radical performance artist, who likes to involve other "authors" in his artwork.
Kassel´s children are the protagonists and are the co-authors whom Althamer incorporates into his new exhibition project Frühling. Starting with the idea that children are still relatively immune to socialisation and society´s norms and conditions, the artist invites them to transform their fantasy and "unbound creativity" into on-the-spot projects. The Fridericianum, highly infused with historical events, with its past as a library and an elitist educational institute as well as its longstanding tradition as an exhibition site, thus passes through a significant transformation. Project arena, playground and sports field, dance or music school-all of this together or none of the above, the artist doesn´t want to set any limits to the children´s imagination. (presse)
