The Mount San Antonio College Art Gallery is pleased to begin its 2010-2011 exhibition season with the work of Joachim Hiller. Two years ago, Hiller was also featured as part of the “In the Collector’s Mind” exhibition series, “From Germany” a survey of contemporary German art from Walter Bischoff’s collection. This time, Berlin- and Stuttgart-based Walter Bischoff has organized a retrospective of the 77-year-old Hiller, featuring forty works going back to the beginning of the painter’s career in 1970.
This retrospective will travel from Mt. San Antonio College to New York’s Chelsea Art Museum opening in December 2010. In addition, a selection of these artworks will be displayed at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Los Angeles art critic Peter Frank, who has contributed an essay to the retrospective’s exhibition, described Hiller’s work as “entirely abstract, but grounded in the forms and patterns of nature as he observes it. Whether he is referencing the texture of stone, the spread of stars in the nighttime sky, or the human form, Hiller contemplates at once the majesty of the form and color nature provides us and the mystery of natural energy and balance.”
