Highlights include the return of iconic works at Dia:Beacon and a presentation of rarely exhibited works by John Chamberlain at The Dan Flavin Art Institute
Dec 20, 2012
New York, NY—Dia Art Foundation is pleased to announce that throughout January 2013 it will reinstall works by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Donald Judd, and Andy Warhol at Dia:Beacon as well as present a special exhibition of rarely seen works by John Chamberlain at The Dan Flavin Art Institute in Bridgehampton, opening on January 12, 2013.

These exhibitions will be supplemented by a diverse roster of lectures and programs in New York City and Beacon that explore the work of artists in Dia’s collections and highlight a range of contemporary voices.

Dia:Beacon - Collection Reinstallation
In late 2011, works by Donald Judd and Bernd and Hilla Becher were deinstalled as part of Dia’s preventive conservation initiative. On January 12, 2013 a single work by Donald Judd, Untitled (1976), will be reinstalled in the Judd Gallery at Dia:Beacon. A collection of 17 photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher will be reinstalled in the Becher Gallery at Dia:Beacon, starting January 18, 2013.

At the end of the month, on January 26, 2013, Andy Warhol’s Shadows will return to their previous gallery at Dia:Beacon, following a national tour that included the Arts Club Chicago (April 21–July 29, 2011) and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (September 25, 2011–January 15, 2012). Dia acquired this series of 102 paintings in 1980. Presented as a single monumental work, it demonstrates Warhol's interest in shadows that engaged him throughout the 1970s.

The Dan Flavin Art Institute - Special Exhibition

The Dan Flavin Art Institute in Bridgehampton, New York, will open 2013 with the special exhibition, John Chamberlain: It Ain’t Cheap. The exhibition, which presents six of the artist’s rarely exhibited metal paintings from 1965, as well as a seminal sculpture titled It Ain’t Cheap from the same year, will be on view from January 12– October 20, 2013. These works are from a series of 12-inch-square paintings that were presented at Leo Castelli Gallery in January 1965 in a solo exhibition titled Paintings done in auto lacquer and metal flake on formica.

Dia presented an exhibition of work by John Chamberlain at The Dan Flavin Art Institute in 2007. John Chamberlain: It Ain’t Cheap follows previous exhibitions at The Dan Flavin Art Institute of works by Jean-Luc Moulène (2012), Koo Jeong A (2011), Imi Knoebel (2008–10), Fred Sandback (2004–6), and others. A permanent installation of nine works in fluorescent light created by Dan Flavin is on view on the second floor.
