HASSELBLAD AWARD 2011 an Walid Raad

Walid Raad (* 1967 in in Chbanieh, Libanon / lebt in New York) erhält den mit rund 113.000 Euro dotierten Hasselblad Preis 2011. Der libanesische Künstler setzt sich in seinen Fotografien, Videos und Installationen mit der Zeitgeschichte im Nahen Osten auseinander.

Bekannt wurde Walid Raad mit seinem “The Atlas Group” - Projekt, in dem er sich von 1989 bis 2004 der Geschichte und der Gegenwart seines Heimatlandes während des Bürgerkrieges 1975-1990/91) widmete.

Walid Raad nahm u.a. an der Documenta 11 und der Whitney Biennale 2002 teil.

In der Jurybegründung heißt es:
Walid Raad is one of the most original and singular contemporary artists using photography. He has been widely acclaimed for his project “The Atlas Group”, in which Raad generated original ideas about the relationship between documentary photography, archive and history. In order to document and investigate Lebanon’s contemporary history, Raad developed innovative methods
of approaching the imagery of war and the way political and social conflict can be explored in art. Through Raad’s work we are able to question the traditional iconography of war photography and speculate productively on visuality, memory and violence."

Der Hasselblad Award für Fotografie gehört weltweit zu den renommiertesten Preisen im Bereich Fotografie.
