Vom 12. Juni bis zum 19. September 2027 findet die 16. Ausgabe der documenta (D16) in Kassel unter der Künstlerischen Leitung von Naomi Beckwith statt. D16 feiert die verbindende Kraft von künstlerischen Praktiken, Musik, Performances, Improvisation und kollektivem Lernen. In Zeiten einer zunehmenden gesellschaftlichen Polarisierung wird D16 einen Ort für transkulturellen Dialog schaffen, an dem sich Besucher*innen auf Augenhöhe begegnen können, getragen von gegenseitigem Respekt und geteilter Verantwortung. Die Webseite der kommenden Ausgabe gibt erste Einblicke in das künstlerische Konzept, präsentiert das neue Erscheinungsbild sowie das Vermittlungsprogramm. Ab sofort sind Tickets für die Ausstellung und Führungen online erhältlich.
Die visuelle Sprache der D16 entstand in einem kollaborativen Prozess der Designstudios Beautiful Baby Limited, Data Orbit und Wiegand von Hartmann. Das Design basiert auf dem Zusammenspiel von drei Schriften. Degree Two Thousand Twenty Six, die von Beautiful Baby Limited eigens für D16 entworfen wurde, ist inspiriert von der handgezeichneten Blocktypografie, die der Soziologe und Bürgerrechtler W. E. B. Du Bois gemeinsam mit seinen Studierenden für eine Plakatserie auf der Pariser Weltausstellung im Jahr 1900 entwickelte. Die Serie gilt als ein Vorläufer der modernen Datenvisualisierung und des Datenaktivismus. Ab heute ist die neue visuelle Identität der D16 auch auf Plakaten in der Kasseler Innenstadt zu sehen.
New Art School Modality x D16
Die New Art School Modality (nasm) ist eine Initiative, die von Romi Crawford, Mitglied des Künstlerischen Teams der D16, gegründet wurde. nasm wurde mit dem Ziel ins Leben gerufen, ein alternatives Modell für künstlerische und kunsthistorische Forschung und Lehre zu schaffen sowie ein globales, interdisziplinäres Netzwerk zu etablieren. Im Zusammenspiel mit D16 wird nasm vor und während der Laufzeit Programme zur Vermittlung anbieten.
Vom 12. bis zum 16. Oktober 2026 lädt nasm zu how to fall ein: ein Kurs, der Methoden und Strategien entwickelt, um mit den Chancen und Risiken umzugehen, die aus Zuständen des Fallens resultieren. Welche Ideen und Formen können damit entstehen? Die Anmeldung ist ab sofort möglich.
Publikationen
Die D16 veröffentlicht zwei Bücher in deutscher und englischer Sprache mit dem Verlagspartner Prestel. Der D16 Companion und das D16 Sourcebook erscheinen zur Eröffnung der D16 im Juni 2027. Der D16 Companion wird von Mayra A. Rodriguez Castro, Chefredakteurin der D16, herausgegeben. Dieses Begleitbuch gibt Einblicke in die künstlerischen Praktiken der Ausstellungsteilnehmer*innen. Das D16 Sourcebook, herausgegeben von Naomi Beckwith, der Künstlerischen Leiterin der D16, und Mayra A. Rodriguez Castro, vereint aktuelle Denkansätze und künstlerische Praktiken, die das 21. Jahrhundert prägen. Die Publikation umfasst Beiträge des Künstlerischen Teams sowie eingeladener Autor*innen, mit einer Einleitung von Naomi Beckwith. Die Vorbestellung ist ab sofort über den D16 Shop möglich. Ferner wird D16 eine Schallplatte produzieren, die zur Eröffnung im Juni 2027 erscheint.

Ab sofort können Tickets für die Ausstellung und Führungen online und vor Ort im Fridericianum und bei Kassel Marketing erworben werden. Ein Fokus liegt bei niedrigschwelligen Tourangeboten in Leichter Sprache sowie deutscher und internationaler Gebärdensprache. Zudem gibt es wieder Tickets mit Solidaritäts-Prinzip: Der Kauf dieses Tickets ermöglicht einer anderen Person freien Eintritt oder eine kostenlose Ausstellungsführung.

D16 Presents New Visual Design and Kicks Off Ticket Sales
From June 12 to September 19, 2027, the 16th edition of documenta (D16) will take place in Kassel under the Artistic Direction of Naomi Beckwith. D16 will be a celebration of artistic practices, collective learning, performances, music and improvisation creating new bonds and shared experiences. In times of increasing polarization, D16 will become a dialogic arena for transcultural thought where guests meet on equal footing, in the spirit of shared responsibility and mutual respect. The website for the next edition offers first insights into D16’s curatorial concept, presents the visual design and the educational program. Tickets for the exhibition and guided tours are now available online.
In a collaborative process, the design studios Beautiful Baby Limited, Data Orbit and Wiegand von Hartmann jointly developed the visual language of D16 based on the interplay of three typefaces. Degree Two Thousand Twenty Six, the typeface specifically designed for D16 by Beautiful Baby Limited, takes its cues from the handwritten block typography that sociologist and civil rights activist W. E. B. Du Bois developed with his students for a series of posters at the Paris Exposition of 1900. The series pioneered data activism and modern data visualization. As of today, D16’s new visual identity can also be discovered in a poster series across Kassel.

An initiative founded by D16 artistic team member Romi Crawford, The New Art School Modality (nasm) was launched with the goal of creating an alternative model for art making and art historical research as well as establishing a global, interdisciplinary platform. In an interplay with D16, nasm will present mediation and public programs prior to and during the exhibition.
From October 12 to October 16, 2026, nasm will host how to fall, a course centered on forms and strategies that attend to the risk and the potential that comes from states of falling. It examines what ideas and forms can emerge from this. Applications are now open.
Publications
D16 will release two publications in English and German through its publishing partner Prestel. The D16 Companion and the D16 Sourcebook will be published at the opening of D16 in June 2027. The D16 Companion, edited by Mayra A. Rodriguez Castro, Editor-in-Chief of D16, offers insights into the artistic practices of the participating artists. The D16 Sourcebook, edited by Naomi Beckwith, Artistic Director of D16, and Mayra A. Rodriguez Castro, reflects on contemporary thought and artistic approaches shaping the twenty-first century. The publication brings together commissioned texts, contributions by the curatorial team, and an introduction by Naomi Beckwith. D16 will also produce a record to be released at the time of the opening. Pre-orders for the books are already available online via the D16 shop.
Tickets for D16
Tickets for the exhibition and guided tours are now available online as well as on-site at Fridericianum and at Kassel Marketing. A particular focus is placed on accessible tour options in Easy Language as well as German and International Sign Language. Additionally, D16 offers solidarity tickets: You can purchase a ticket to enable another person to receive free admission or a complimentary guided tour.
The mediation program is funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation). The Kulturstiftung des Bundes is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. The New Art School Modality is supported by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
